About

A cryptogram is a short quotation with its letters swapped for other letters. Every A becomes the same letter throughout, every B another, and so on. The challenge is working out which is which. Letter frequency, word shape and a little guesswork are the tools of the trade.

Cryptogram Online remembers what you have solved, and never gives you the same quotation twice.

Every quotation is graded on what its own letters give away, rather than on how long it is. There is a page on each grade, written from the catalog itself: what makes one easy, what puts one in the middle, and what makes one hard.

If you’re new to these, start with how to solve a cryptogram. It’s written from the same catalog: where a solve actually starts, what gives a letter away, and which bits of the usual advice the numbers don’t support.

There’s more to say here, and it’s coming. Until then, get in touch. Questions, corrections and quotations worth adding are all welcome.
