What it means
The sun is about four hundred times wider than the moon and also about four hundred times further away, so the two discs appear almost identical from the ground. Nothing requires that; it is a coincidence of this era. The moon is drifting away by a few centimeters a year, so total eclipses will eventually stop happening altogether, and in the distant past the moon covered the sun with room to spare.
