What it means
The Earth blocks direct sunlight, but the atmosphere around its edge bends some light inward and scatters the blue out of it on the way through, which is the same physics that reddens a sunset. What reaches the moon is the reddened remainder, gathered from the ring of sunrise and sunset running right around the planet. Standing on the moon at that moment you would see the Earth as a black disc inside a thin red ring.
