What it means
The sun blows a stream of charged particles that carves out a region called the heliosphere, and the boundary where it gives way to the gas between the stars is the heliopause. Voyager 1 crossed it in 2012, at over eighteen billion kilometers out, and Voyager 2 followed by a different route six years later. Both still report back, on transmitters weaker than a refrigerator bulb, across a gap where a signal takes many hours.
