Pluto was counted as a planet for seventy six years, until astronomers voted to call it a dwarf.

Astronomy Facts, sourced to NASA.

What it means

Nothing about Pluto changed in 2006. What changed was the definition, after surveys began turning up similar bodies out beyond Neptune and it became clear that either Pluto was one of many or the list of planets was about to get long. The new definition asks that a planet have cleared its orbital neighborhood, and Pluto shares its region with a great deal of other material.

The claim comes from NASA, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.

This one can change, so it is due to be checked again by 2029-01-01.
