What it means

Once the hydrogen in the core runs low the sun will expand enormously, swallowing the inner planets, and then drift its outer layers away as a glowing shell. What is left is the bare core: a white dwarf about as wide as the Earth and about as heavy as the sun it came from, with no fuel and nothing to do but cool. A teaspoon of that material would weigh several tons. It has a few billion years to run first.
