What it means
The surface is water ice, nearly free of craters, laced with long reddish fractures, and that youth means it is being resurfaced from below. Jupiter's gravity flexes the moon and the flexing supplies heat, which is what keeps an ocean liquid so far from the sun. Measurements of how Europa disturbs Jupiter's magnetic field point to a salty conducting layer, and the estimated volume is around twice that of all our oceans.
