What it means

When a massive star collapses, the pressure forces electrons and protons together and leaves something closer to one gigantic atomic nucleus than to a star. It is perhaps twenty kilometers across. A sugar cube of the material would weigh about as much as a mountain, gravity at the surface is a hundred billion times ours, and many of them spin hundreds of times a second, sweeping a beam past us like a lighthouse.
