What it means

It comes to roughly six trillion miles, or nine and a half trillion kilometers. Astronomers use it because the numbers in ordinary units stop being readable: the nearest star after the sun is about four light years away, which is around twenty five trillion miles. The unit also carries a fact for free. Look at something a thousand light years off and you are seeing it as it was a thousand years ago.
