What it means
Phobos orbits so quickly, in under eight hours, that it laps the planet's own rotation and appears to rise in the west. Deimos moves more sedately and behaves the way a moon is supposed to. Both are small, irregular and dark, and they look far more like captured asteroids than like anything that formed alongside Mars, though the question is not settled.
The claim comes from NASA, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.
This is not the kind of claim that goes out of date, which is why it was set as a puzzle rather than a fact with a shelf life.
