What it means
Pluto's orbit is far more elongated and more tilted than a planet's, and part of it dips inside Neptune's path. Between 1979 and 1999 Pluto was the eighth body out rather than the ninth. The two can never collide, because they are locked in a resonance: Pluto goes around twice for every three Neptune orbits, and the arrangement keeps them apart.
The claim comes from NASA, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.
This is not the kind of claim that goes out of date, which is why it was set as a puzzle rather than a fact with a shelf life.
