What it means
Iron sits at the bottom of the nuclear energy well. Fusing lighter nuclei together releases energy, and splitting heavier ones does too, but iron gives nothing either way. A massive star that has built an iron core has run out of fuel, and the collapse that follows is a supernova. The gold in a wedding ring was made in an event like that, not in ordinary starlight.
The claim comes from Royal Society of Chemistry, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.
This is not the kind of claim that goes out of date, which is why it was set as a puzzle rather than a fact with a shelf life.
