The Great Red Spot on Jupiter is a single storm that has been turning for centuries on end.

Astronomy Facts, sourced to NASA.

What it means

Astronomers have watched a spot at that latitude since at least the eighteen thirties, and possibly since the sixteen hundreds. There is no land on Jupiter to break the storm up, which is part of why it has lasted, and it is wide enough to swallow the Earth. It has been shrinking noticeably over the past century and is now considerably narrower than it was, so it will not last forever.

The claim comes from NASA, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.

This one can change, so it is due to be checked again by 2028-01-01.
