What it means
Io is caught between Jupiter's enormous gravity and the tugs of the neighboring moons, so its orbit cannot settle into a circle. The distance to Jupiter keeps changing, the moon is flexed by hundreds of meters on every circuit, and that constant kneading heats the interior. The result is the most volcanically active body in the solar system, resurfacing itself so fast that it has essentially no impact craters left.
