What it means
Goldfish have been trained to run mazes, press levers and respond to a feeding signal at a set time of day, and laboratory work on their spatial memory locates it in a specific part of the forebrain. The three second claim has no experimental source at all. It is a good example of something that spread because it was repeatable rather than because anyone had measured it, which is exactly the failure this collection is written to avoid.
