What it means
The first encounter with a new infection is slow, because the right defenders have to be found among an enormous variety and then multiplied. What the body keeps afterward is a population of memory cells tuned to that specific intruder, so a second encounter is met in hours rather than days and often never becomes an illness at all. A vaccine gets that file opened using something that cannot make you ill in the first place.
