What it means
A signaling molecule leaves one cell and binds a receptor on another, and the receptor passes the news inward through a relay of proteins until something changes. What varies is the range. Some signals act on the cell next door, some on the cell that released them, and hormones travel the bloodstream to reach organs elsewhere entirely. The same molecule can mean different things to different cells, because the meaning is in the receiver.
