A fever is not damage done by an infection. It is your own thermostat, turned up deliberately.

What it means

The set point in the brain is raised, and the body then works to reach the new target, which is why the shivering and the feeling of cold come at the start of a fever rather than at the end. The higher temperature slows some bacteria and viruses down and speeds parts of the immune response up. That is why a moderate fever in an otherwise well adult is a sign the defense is running, not a symptom to be extinguished on sight.
