What it means
A cube has eight corners, twelve edges and six faces, and eight minus twelve plus six is two. So is the answer for a pyramid, a football and any lump you can push into a ball shape without tearing it. The number is a property of the shape rather than of the particular carving, which is why it survives every deformation, and it is the seed of the whole subject of topology.
