What it means
Lend a coin at a hundred percent annual interest and you end the year with two. Compound it monthly and you get a little over two and six tenths. Compound it every instant and you get a number close to two point seven one eight, and no faster schedule beats it. That limit is the number called e, and it turns up in radioactive decay, cooling curves and population growth for the same underlying reason.
