What it means
Counting numbers answer how many, and nobody needs a numeral for a quantity that is not there. Zero enters as a placeholder, so that the notation can tell three hundred and five from thirty five, and the Babylonians used a mark for the gap without treating it as a number. Treating zero as a number in its own right, something you can add and subtract and be in trouble dividing by, came from India around the seventh century.
