What it means
The Clay Mathematics Institute chose them to mark the century and set a million dollar prize for each. One has been settled. Grigori Perelman proved the Poincare conjecture and then declined both the prize and the Fields Medal, saying the recognition was misplaced. The remaining six include the Riemann hypothesis, which Hilbert had already put on his own famous list a hundred years earlier.
