What it means
Water is about eight hundred times denser than air, so a column of it ten meters tall weighs as much as the entire column of air above your head. At the bottom of a deep ocean trench the load is around a thousand atmospheres. That is what makes deep submersibles expensive: everything with air inside has to resist it, and it is also why a diver has to come up slowly, letting dissolved gas leave the blood without bubbling.
