What it means
Parrotfish bite chunks off a reef to reach the algae growing in it, grind the coral skeleton with teeth in their throats, and excrete what is left as fine white carbonate sand. A single large fish can produce hundreds of pounds of it in a year. Sand elsewhere has a duller origin, mostly quartz that survived the weathering of granite because it is hard and chemically dull, which is why so many beaches are pale yellow.
