What it means
In the open ocean a tsunami may be less than a meter high, with a wavelength of hundreds of kilometers, and a ship over it would feel nothing at all. It moves at something like the speed of a jet aircraft. As the water shoals near a coast the front slows, the back catches up, and all that energy is forced into a shorter, taller form. The height at the shore is where the danger appears.
The claim comes from NOAA, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.
This is not the kind of claim that goes out of date, which is why it was set as a puzzle rather than a fact with a shelf life.
