At least half the oxygen you breathe was produced in the ocean rather than by trees on land.

What it means
The work is done by plankton, drifting algae and photosynthetic bacteria, all of them individually invisible and collectively enormous. One group of marine bacteria may account for a fifth of the oxygen in the atmosphere on its own. The exact share is hard to pin down because the ocean also consumes oxygen, so estimates vary, but the ocean contribution is at least as large as the land one.
The claim comes from NOAA.
