What it means
The picture of an underground lake is wrong nearly everywhere. An aquifer is ordinary rock or sediment whose pore spaces happen to be full of water and connected well enough for it to move. Sand and gravel make good ones; clay holds plenty of water and will not give it up. That is why a well is a hole into wet rock rather than into a cavity, and why pumping too hard in one spot draws the water table down for kilometers around.
