What it means
A PET scan is a positron emission tomography scan, and a positron is the antimatter twin of an electron. A patient is given a tracer whose atoms emit them. Each positron travels a millimeter or two, meets an ordinary electron, and both vanish into a pair of gamma rays flying in opposite directions. The scanner catches both and draws the line between them. Millions of these scans are done every year on exactly that annihilation.
