Solved cryptogram
One pure number, close to one part in a hundred and thirty seven, governs how light meets matter.
Physics Facts, sourced to NIST.
What it means
The fine structure constant has no units at all. It is the same number whether you work in meters or in miles, which means it is a genuine property of the universe rather than an artifact of how we measure. It sets the strength of the electromagnetic force, and therefore the size of atoms, the colors of spectral lines and the rate at which chemistry happens. Nobody can derive it.
The claim comes from NIST, and the page it comes from was read on 2026-08-27 to confirm it still says this.
This is not the kind of claim that goes out of date, which is why it was set as a puzzle rather than a fact with a shelf life.
