What it means

A proton is three quarks, and adding up the masses of those quarks accounts for around one percent of the proton. The rest is the energy of the force holding them together, which has mass because energy does. The Higgs field gives the quarks and the electron the small masses they have, so it matters enormously for how the universe turned out and hardly at all for what a bathroom scale reads.
