What it means
Inside iron, cobalt and nickel the electron spins line up with their neighbors across patches called domains, and inside each patch the magnetism is intense. In an unmagnetized nail those patches are oriented at random and cancel out. Stroking it with a magnet turns them into agreement, which is all that magnetizing means. Heat the nail past a certain temperature and the alignment is shaken apart, and the magnetism vanishes.
